Design Problem: How do you create Ludo narrative resonance for players in situations where their character or avatar is in immediate danger?

Solution: While a fear of or adversity to losing a game is something that is usually inherent to players, this anxiety is often minimized by the knowledge that if their character dies or suffers a setback, they will be able to reload the game from a checkpoint or save file. By removing the player’s ability to reload from a recent checkpoint, designers can convey the sense of danger and fear for life that the character of their game is feeling to players who now must contend with the fact that if they die then they need to restart the entire challenge, level, or perhaps the whole game.

As the player progresses through the game and the difficulty increases, their fear of dying becomes greater because it means they will have to replay even more of the game/level. This coincides with the player character likely being more scared of the increasingly powerful enemies or difficult challenges they face in later levels/gameplay sections.

Narrative: The player character is a monk that is faithful to the gods of the realm. At the start of the game, it is revealed that a cult that opposes the gods performed a ritual that gave power to a dark and malevolent force that wants to kill the gods and shroud the world in darkness. This force has significantly weakened the gods of the realm, but the gods still have some power in the form of their artifacts. The player character is tasked with collecting those artifacts and using the powers they bestow to challenge the evil force and save the realm. This mission starts with the player character arriving at the River Goddess's temple. While exploring the temple, an earthquake happens, which sends the temple tumbling into the river. The River Goddess uses her remaining power to keep the player safe and keep as much of her temple intact as possible after the earthquake, but the player must quickly retrieve her artifact before the lava from a nearby volcanic eruption (the source of the earthquake) descends on the player. Once the player receives the River Goddess's artifact, they will be able to walk on water, which is how they will be able to escape.
